BLACK BUSINESS NEWS OF THE WEEK
UK’s first Black owned Video On Demand [VOD] platform kushcinema.com has launched.
The birth of Kush Cinema Online was a seed long in nurturing but spurned into growth and reality during the devastating pandemic of 2020- 2021 and the sudden online demand and consumption of digital media; but the fuel that propelled growth was the heinous and senseless murder of George Floyd in America leading to a great awakening and a deep-sense that we at Kush Films as a leading and pioneering film exhibition/distribution company serving our community for 23 years really now needed to start focusing on ownership, being even more self-determining and have a greater say in helping independent filmmakers showcase, distribute and monetize their content thus a conversation was sparked and Kush Cinema Online was born.
BLACKSTAR OF THE WEEK
Mark Dalgety founder of UK based Dalgety Herbal Teas, is a successful producer of high-quality strong tasting teas.
"I was trying to relocate to Guyana after completing my degree in chemical engineering. My plans had to change when I looked at my bank balance. With £1,000 available on my credit card, I visited Guyana and organised the collection of 1000lbs of Cerassie / Corilla tea bush.
I sat in the front room of my parents house, and using a pair of scissors, cut it up into 16,000 one-ounce packets. I then shipped it to the UK, and sold the packets for 50 pence each, raising about £8,000, which was used to invest in tea bagging technology."

Masterclass Teaching : Re-indigenising Technology on Afropresentism FREE Thursday 14th April 18:00 - 21:00 Brixton London
Colonial frameworks rooted in “development” myths have come to dominate what we perceive to be “technology". What does it look like to take a step beyond decolonisation towards re-indigenisation in the process of re-wiring this understanding? As Black diasporic people living in the age of Big Data, how do we navigate what Kodwo Eshun terms the “Age of Total Recall”?
This session will begin with an interactive conversation with Neema Githere, that is grounded in Neema's ancestral heritage and traditional technology practices. Neema will present these ancient forms as a practical and present contribution to supporting a sustainable lifestyle within paradigms of oppression.
Neema has been theorising around Afropresentism for the past 5 years. Tying together the work of Bell Hooks and Walter Rodney through guerrilla theory—a practice that upholds conversation as the highest mode of speculation—participants will be invited to show up as experts of their own lived experiences and strategise together on how to implement indigenous technology in their day-to-day lives.
